Wildfire, a red stallion with a silvery white mane and tail walked across his desert home. He had recently left his bachelor herd and was looking for mares to start a band of his own. He was a strong, big, stocky stallion who had leaned to fight well from the bachelor band colts. He was a seven year old and in the prime of his life.

Silver, a grayish dun mare was walking quietly with her young colt, Stormy. The dun colt had only been born after she left her old herd. The lead in that herd had made her carry the colt. They both had doral stripes so they could hide a little. She was hoping to find a place to stay where her colt could be accepted until he got old enough to be kicked out of the herd. But, he'd forever remember his dam. They had a bond no one but they could feel.

Wildfire stopped dead in his track when he saw the mare and the foal. He watched them for a moment then he picked up a trot as he moved toward them. But he didn't want to frighten them so he slowed to a walk as he got closer.

Silver looked up from checking on her colt. She spotted him. Stormy whinnied playfully and stood watching the stallion coming over. Stormy was a playful little colt. He suddenly gave a small buck playfully at his mother. Silver reached and gently nipped her colt to make him settle down.

Wildfire looked from the colt, Stormy then back to Silver. "I see that you are alone. You can stay with me, I have no mares of my own yet and I can protect both of you well." he said.

"Thank you, Wildfire. My son would have been turned out of the herd I used to be in before he even started to nurse," she said. She flicked her tail. Stormy was playing around after seeing a little field mouse come out of no where. He was trying to play with it.

Wildfire snorted again. "You and your son can stay as long as you want. I will made stormy leave only when he is old enough to fend for himself." he said and took a step closed to the mare and lowered his head to let her know he spoke the truth.

Silver snorted softly and watched her colt playing around close by. "Thank you, Wildfire. Even when that day comes when he has to leave I'll still forever have a tight bond with him that all mares have with their foals," she said. Stormy was rolling in the grass now for no reason.

Stormy looked at Wildfire. He couldn't speak yet and suddenly didn't want to play anymore. He moved and started to nurse off his mother. Silver jumped slightly feeling him begin to nurse. He was a hugnry little colt.

Wildfire lifted his head then looked out over the open desert. The sky was blue and there wasn't a cloud to be seen. Wildfire was glad not to be alone anymore.
